Diplodia

Diplodia Fr., in Montagne, Annls Sci. Nat., Bot., sér. 2 1: 302 (1834)

Index Fungorum number: IF 8047; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00147; – 397 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2020), 30 species with molecular data (Jayawardena et al. 2019).

Type species: Diplodia mutila (Fr.) Mont., Annls Sci. Nat., Bot., sér. 2 1: 302 (1834).

Sphaeria mutila Fr., Syst. mycol. (Lundae) 2(2): 424 (1823)

Notes: Diplodia comprises two morphological groups that are supported by two distinct phylogenetic lineages. In one type the conidia are initially hyaline and aseptate, later becoming brown and 1-septate. Pigmentation is often delayed and in some species dark conidia are never seen. In the second type the conidia become pigmented at an early stage, even while they are enclosed within the pycnidia, they only rarely become septate. There are 1265 names recorded in Index Fungorum (Dissanayake et al. 2016).
